New Year, New Approach To Detoxing

We’ve heard it all before: new year, new me, blah blah blah. But if we log in and see Sammy from high school posting another Instagram story of herself adding celery to her breakfast juice, or Chris from the office pledging to eat nothing but steak and protein bars to bulk up while very obviously skipping leg day, we’ll probably scream.

Having new goals in the new year is cool, and all, but have you ever just wanted to simply feel better without needing to down shots of wheatgrass or make grand statements about fresh starts on social media? We promise that much to the dismay of Sammy and Chris, it is possible. We’ve put together some of our favorite GOFA detox tips that won’t leave you absolutely hating your life but will simply have you making choices that will help you feel better.

When you had a little too much to drink last night

The bubbles were flowing, you were feeling warm and fuzzy, and remember making friends with everyone around you, then someone said the dreaded “S” word – “shots!”. For some reason, you obliged. It would be rude not to, and you’re not in the business of hurting anyone’s feelings. We get it. We’ve all been there before. And while it certainly is fun at the time, the next morning (and let’s face it, if you’re over 25, the whole day) can be rough.

If you need to feel better and detox from the hangover, eat as many of these nourishing foods as you can. Experts agree that they’re the best for helping to ease the symptoms of hangovers and boosting the body’s levels of vitamins and minerals:

  • Avocado
  • Brown rice
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Pickles
  • Bananas
  • Bone broth
  • Sauerkraut
  • Eggs
  • Oats
  • Watermelon

Of course, the best thing to do for your body is to stay hydrated, so make sure that you drink plenty of water to replenish what you’ve lost.  Or why not try our detox smoothie.

When you’re feeling overwhelmed

Thanks to Millennials, the conversation about mental health has finally opened up (You’re welcome. Love, A Millennial). These days, everyone is more open about how they’re feeling. We have more resources available to help us through tough times, and we’re all becoming increasingly equipped to deal with moments that are overwhelming or when we’re simply just not feeling our best. When you’re stuck in a rut (or even when you’re not), and you just want a few moments of respite from anxiety or whatever it is that’s weighing you down, try meditating for a bit of inner peace. Apps like GOFA offer guided meditations of varying lengths that will leave you feeling grounded when you need it most.

Of course, meditating is not a substitute for medical care, so consult a professional if you need to.

When your skin needs some TLC

When we haven’t been drinking enough water or eating enough fresh fruits and veggies, or when we haven’t been sleeping enough, or even when we’ve been under a bit of stress, the first place it shows is in our skin. For a healthy skin detox, dedicate some time once or twice a week to a homemade face mask. Some of the best skin detoxing ingredients include clay, mud, and avocado. If you’re looking for a scrub, try adding a bit of oatmeal to your mask too.

For a radiant glow, add some Vitamin C serum to your mask. Several skincare brands have added this serum to their lines, so it can readily be found at drugstores. And don’t forget about your eyes – if you have some extra baggage and dark circles around them, place some tea bags or fresh cucumbers on them for a few minutes. This will help reduce the appearance of fine lines and puffiness.
